Abstract

Eiectrooptical methods are finding an increasing number of applications in the fields of industrial quality control and process monitoring.1,2 The main advantages of optical methods with respect to other inspection techniques are their rapidity, noncontact nature, and compatibility with automated systems. Previous problems of fragility, sensitivity to vibrations, and cost are being overcome by development of rugged and inexpensive optical components such as the expanding family of fiber-optic sensors.3
