Abstract

A technique was developed using differential absorption and scattering for the remote measurement of methane near a working face in an underground coal mine. The possibility of using art Er: YAG laser and the R(6) methane absorption line in the 2v3 overtone band for remotely detecting methane in the atmosphere was suggested by White and Watkins.1 Based on theoretical calculations, we concluded that it would be feasible to use the differential absorption and scattering technique for the remote methane measurement in a coal mine environment.2 It was predicted that an Er:YAG laser operated at 1-10 mJ/pulse could be used to measure methane concentrations up to 5% at a location 300 mm in front of a working face from a distance of 7-15 m.
