Abstract
Laser fire polishing is the process where a laser beam which is strongly absorbed by a material is used to heat the surface to the melting point and thereby remove scratches and digs which remain after conventional polishing. This technique has been used successfully to produce a final finish on fused quartz which shows significantly less scattering and is more resistant to laser-induced damage than the best mechanically finished surfaces.1,2
