Abstract

Linear and nonlinear dispersion effects inside the laser cavity affect seriously the output light characteristics, especially in ultrashort pulse lasers. We found an anomalous spectral and temporal behavior in a cw hybrid mode-locked subpicosecond dye laser, and it is attributed to the presence of unexpectedly large self-phase modulation in a dye jet stream, which has hitherto been considered to be negligible in cw mode-locked dye lasers because of the thin active media.
