Tunable emerald lasers: advances

Abstract

The first tunable emerald [Be3Al2(SiO3)6:Cr3+] laser amplifier and laser oscillator have been observed.1 The laser gain is due to transitions from the 4 T2 level to the vibronically excited ground state of Cr3+. The single-pass gain (SPG) of emerald has been measured from 695 to 835 nm; high gain is present over the central portion of this region. In the SPG measurements a probe beam passes through an emerald rod in a fiashlamp cavity.
