Abstract
Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research has motivated the evolution of high-power Nd:glass laser systems at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory over the past decade. The fundamental design, that of a master oscillator driving a single pass power amplifier, has been gradually improved by using successive generations of progressively more reliable, efficient, and cost effective components. The Nova laser is the current manifestation of this design philosophy and is scheduled to irradiate ICF targets in 1985.
