Abstract

The use of high-power frequency-doubled 1.05-^m lasers produces x-ray sources with high- conversion efficiencies in the 10-3-A spectral region. The wavelength and bandwidth of the x-ray source can be adjusted by changing the target material. Near-monochromatic radiation can be produced for the He-like resonance lines of elements up to Z~ 25. Bands of emission can be produced from unresolved M shell transition arrays of high Z elements such as Au and Bi. The emission decay time of the resonance lines can be several nanoseconds for low Z elements, but for high Z elements and band transition it is subnanosecond. Examples of spectra from 1.05-, 0.53-, and 0.35-jttrn irradiation will be given.
