Flashlamp-induced aberrations in disk amplifiers

Abstract

Multipass amplifiers are of interest for future fusion laser systems, because they can provide high gains at tower cost than single-pass amplifiers. However, beam distortions accumulate with pass number, reducing output beam quality and limiting the maximum useful number of passes. Previous measurements on rod amplifiers1 have shown possible limitations due to beam aberrations induced by flashlamp pumping. The purpose of these measurements was to characterize the induced aberrations of disk amplifiers for simulations of megajoule system performance using multipass amplifiers.
