Abstract
The design, development, and demonstration of a stand-alone 2-bit 1-Gample/sec analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are reported. This 2-bit ADC consists of a comb-generator-driven GaAlAs diode laser, a LiNbO3 Ti-indiffused waveguide interferometric modulator array, Si avalanche photodiodes (APD), wideband dc-coupled amplifiers, and special 1-GHz Si integrated circuits consisting of comparators and 1-8 serial-to-parallel converters. Preliminary experiments at these high sampling rates have been reported previously·1,2 for individual bit channels. Here we report improved device design and performance, full testing of all bits for analog input signals with frequency components up to 499 MHz, and accurate digital-to-analog reconstruction.
