Abstract
We have recently reported pulsed laser emission at 4.3 μm from the [10° 1—10°0]i,ii bands of CO2,1,2 The pulses were obtained by optically pumping a CO2 discharge with a pulsed 10-μm CO2 sequence laser. Average powers of >100 mW were measured from a O-switched system, but the individual pulse energies were only a few microjoules. As the 4.3-μm laser uses conventional CO2 laser technology and has the potential of providing a powerful pulsed source for applications in photochemistry and atmospheric propagation, we undertook a detailed study of the system dynamics and scalability. Our results indicate that 4.3-μm pulse energies of >100 mJ are readily obtainable.
