Abstract

Dynamic single-longitudinal-mode (DSM) lasers as the light source in the 1.5-µm region of ultralong-distance optical communication systems have been investigated in several laboratories. A DSM laser is considered more advantageous than a multimode laser to obtain a wide transmission bandwidth in combination with single-mode optical fibers. As the DSM lasers, DFB and DBR semiconductor lasers have been studied extensively.1-4 Our company has been trying to make wide applications of optical fibers and has studied various optical components and devices. Experimental results on 1.5-µm BH-DFB laser diodes are presented.
