Abstract

Several techniques have been proposed to generate or amplify light pulses in the nanosecond range with satisfactory efficiencies. Pulse shaping or cavity dumping was used initially; more recently pulse compression using backward Raman scattering has been achieved. We describe a new possibility which uses an intracavity Raman medium as a passive cavity dumper. In addition to its simplicity. the principal advantages of this technique are scalability up to large laser diameters and a noncritical behavior in regard to the laser linewidth.
