Electrooptic phase-sensitive detection of optical emission and scattering: methods and applications

Abstract

A method of optical phase-sensitive detection is described, and its applications to the measurement of rapid optical relaxation rates and the separation of Raman scattering from spontaneous emission are discussed. Phase resolution is achieved by using the experimental arrangement shown schematically in Fig. 1. The emission excited by an electrooptically modulated laser is passed through a second electrooptic intensity modulator with adjustable phase relative to the first modulator. The light is then dispersed in a spectrometer and detected.
