The stringent requirements on irradiation uniformity for direct-drive laser fusion are well documented.1 At the University of Rochester the experimental constraints on achieving high levels of irradiation uniformity for the long-wavelength nonuniformities, particularly harmful to target implosion symmetry, have been investigated for the 24-beam Omega symmetric irradiation facility operating at 1054 nm.2 With the recognition that short-wavelength radiation has distinct advantages for ICF from the standpoints of increased absorption, much lower hot electron preheat levels, and high ablation pressures, comes the need to assess the implications this has for irradiation uniformity requirements.
