Abstract

Optical sensing systems with the architecture shown schematically in Fig. 1 are being evaluated for use in research and industrial applications. An electrooptic multiplexer is used to direct radiation from a tunable laser to any of a number of remotely located fiber-optic probes. This enables a single laser to probe simultaneously multiple locations. The light travels to the fiber-optic sensor, interacts with the environment, and returns via another optical fiber. The signal is then optically demultiplexed and preprocessed before conversion to digital form and acquisition by a computer (which may form part of an active feedback loop).
