Abstract

The Madrid Polytechnic University (UPM) is a set of buildings spread out to a radius of ~1 km. A project arose to centralize the management operation of the different Schools of Engineering and Architecture making use of the computer facilities at the Administrative Building (Rectorado). The idea was to replace the old telephone-line-based data link with a new system based on optical communications. This change could improve the quality and transmission rate of the network.
