Abstract

Hydrogen fluoride (HF) chemical lasers are characterized by high electrical efficiency because they are pumped by the exothermic energy of the chemical reactions. A chain reaction HF laser (2.7-3 μm) using an H2/F2 mixture initiated by an intense e-beam can lase at an electrical efficiency in excess of 100% and at a high energy density >200 J/liter and thus is of interest for a laser fusion driver.
