Abstract

Write-once optical storage technology has only begun to appear in the marketplace, but already optical storage systems which use reversible media are being developed by a large number of manufacturers. Whereas write-once technology is being sold primarily for archival document storage and to a limited extent to replace tape storage in computer systems, reversible optical storage technology could, if implemented with the necessary performance features, make significant inroads into the computer storage market including not only tape replacement but disk replacement as well.
