Abstract
The Storage Technology 7600 optical storage subsystem is a high-capacity, high-data rate, and fast-access digital data storage device intended for attachment to large-scale IBM-compatible processors. The overall system consists of the optical storage unit, a removable optical media unit, a system controller, and IBM host software operating in an MVS environment. The optical, servo, and media technology employed in the 7600 have yielded an areal density in excess of 600 million bits/in.2, which allows for a formatted user capacity of 4 billion bytes of information on one side of a 14-irt. platter, at data transfer rates of up to 3 mbytes/sec, and an average access time of 85 msec. The overall architecture of the 7600 optical storage system and salient technologies employed will be reviewed.
