Heterodyne Detection of Thermally-Excited Guided Acoustic Waves in an Optical Fiber

Abstract

Spontaneous Brillouin scattering has been observed from the thermally excited plane-strain (transverse) acoustic normal modes of fused silica single mode optical fibers. Highly resolved spectra of polarized and depolarized scattering are obtained by observing the beat spectrum produced by mixing the forward scattered light with an appropriately phased local oscillator. The spectra consist of a series of approximately 50-100 spikes with widths as narrow as 50 kHz extending from ~20MHz to more than 500MHz.
