Abstract

Growth in knowledge has generated information in an ever-increasing volume, and, simultaneously, it has given rise to the need for efficient distribution and long-term preservation. The new generation of storage media must be removable, possess a high recording capacity, and achieve substantially improved storage life over magnetic media for archival purposes. These requirements are met by Gigadisc, the result of a research program in the laser recording field undertaken in 1969.
