Laser-controlled surface modification using a liquid overlayer

Abstract

Reactions at interfaces are now being examined with increasing vigor, promising applications as diverse as catalyst synthesis to integrated circuit production. As has been true for laser-enhanced chemistry in general, most such efforts have involved gas phase reactions for reasons of familiarity and relative simplicity. But in most conventional industrial processing, the liquid phase is the preferred medium. Thus as improvements have been reported using the liquid phase for laser-induced reactions,1 similar advantages are now being observed in laser processing at liquid-solid interfaces.
