Abstract
Recent success in generating 30-fsec optical pulses has encouraged the speedup of optical devices.1,2 Electrooptic devices are excellent in controllability, and the speedup of their operation to picoseconds or subpicoseconds will enhance their usefulness in optoelectronics and spectroscopy. For random access EO devices based on wideband modulation/switching, their speed of operation is limited by electric factors, namely, electric dispersion, electric time constants, and velocity mismatching between light and electric signals. We consider using a narrowband intense electric signal of high frequency, which will be suitable for speedup of EO devices to the picosecond region since the above electrical limitation factors will be eliminated, although the applicable range is limited to some extent.
