Abstract

The present and future statuses of optical communications systems depend critically upon the availability at reasonable cost of high-performance glass lightguides. Materials science and engineering continue to impact every major aspect of lightguide technology. This impact will be illustrated through selected examples of recent advances in chemical purification, novel dopants for refractive-index control, lightguide preform fabrication processing, novel lightguide designs, fiber drawing, coating and splicing technology, and varied systems applications.
