Abstract
The use of semiconductor lasers for optical intersatellite communication links (ISLs)1 has become increasingly attractive with the advent of commercially available single-frequency devices. These lasers operate with predominantly Lorentzian line-widths of 6 MHz at 15-mW output power2 and can be frequency stabilized to better than 1 MHz.3 A practical ISL receiving low-power density signals would be capable of frequency tracking only.1,4 This limits the optimum modulation scheme to orthogonal signaling with M-ary FSK. In the work reported here, M = 4.
