Development of apparatus for automated recognition and tracking of targets from thermal imagery, using coherent optical data processing techniques

Abstract

A system has been constructed based on the VanderLugt coherent optical correlator invented in 1963.1 Input data from a thermal imager were transferred via a fiber-optic faceplate cathode ray tube onto a Hughes liquid crystal light valve. Light from a 5-mW He-Ne laser was used, and matched spatial filters (MSFs) were created on 10E75 holographic plates. The correlation output from the optical system was focused onto a TV camera, and simple digital electronics were used to threshold the signal.
