Abstract

We have a continuing effort directed at understanding in detail flashlamp pumping of Nd:glass disk amplifiers and improving their efficiency. Our goal is to improve the performance/cost figure of such devices for their use in a possible fusion driver to follow Nova. In a parallel effort,1 we are investigating the emission characteristics and Nd pumping efficiency of individual flashlamps. In this work we measured the influence on the pumping efficiency of lamp packing fraction, flashlamp reflector shape, flashlamp pulse width, and mutual effects caused by the presence of many lamps in the pump cavity.
