Solitons in stimulated Raman scattering: a review of recent results

Abstract

Solitons were discovered and identified in stimulated Raman scattering in 1983.1 They appear as short pulses of pump radiation in regions and in conditions where normally complete or nearly complete pump depletion is expected. The mechanisms of both soliton creation and propagation have been studied thoroughly in recent experiments showing excellent agreement with both numerical and analytical models. Solitons are created by a rapid variation in relative phase between the pump and initial Stokes field.
