Abstract

Harris and Stodolsky1 first showed the formal equivalence between the quantum states of chiral molecules (which are formed from the superposition of symmetric and antisymmetric energy eigenstates) and the states of spectroscopic chromophores following a 90° pulse of coherent electromagnetic radiation.2 This equivalence implies that it should be possible to convert racemic mixtures into pure enantiomers using such pulses, whenever the carrier is in resonance with the tunneling frequency associated with the appropriate intermolecular motion.3
