Abstract
The recent surge of activity in the development of new solid-state laser materials has reemphasized the need for effective diagnostics to probe the optical properties of active media under static and optically pumped conditions. Optical properties such as refractive-index gradients, low-angle scattering, and birefringence contribute significantly to laser performance as do optical effects induced by pumping: thermal lensing; stress-optic effects; and induced birefringence.
