Abstract

This paper describes the operation and performance of a frequency shift keyed optical heterodyne communication system using Fabry-Perot GaAIAs diode lasers as the source laser and also as the local oscillator. The data rate of the system is continuously variable between 50 and 250 Mbit/sec. Fabry-Perot lasers are used because of their simplicity of operation, their ability to be directly frequency modulated by changing a small fraction (<10%) of the injection current, and their wide range of continuous wavelength tunability (≈5–15 Å) via thermal effects.
