Multicolor imaging and contrast enhancement in cancer tumor localization using laser- induced fluorescence in hematoporphyrin derivative-bearing tissue

Abstract

Hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) is known to be selectively retained in tumor tissue. Principles for contrast enhancement in HPD tumor localization, recently described for point measurements,1 have now been used in 1-D imaging measurements on rat tumors. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in three-wavelength bands has been simultaneously recorded using a linear array detector in combination with a multimirror arrangement. The principles in the measurements are illustrated In Fig. 1, which shows spectrally resolved point measurements along a line starting in muscle and extending into a tumor. It can be seen that blue-green fluorescence as induced by a N2 laser decreases in tumor, whereas the total Intensity at 630 nm, which is the position of the most characteristic HPD peak, stays almost constant.
