Abstract
With the invention of the picosecond Kerr optical shutter, the possible medical applications of optical ranging were first suggested over a decade ago.1,2 Since that time several different techniques have been developed for optical range gating.3,4 However, because of the required high temporal resolution and sensitivity, few investigations of biological systems have been performed. The recent development of femtosecond laser sources5 makes feasible previously unrealizable medical applications of optical ranging.
