Airborne lidar measurements of column-content and attitude-resolved SF6 concentrations

Abstract

A methodology is needed to obtain data for development and validation of computer models that predict the downwind concentration distributions of toxic and hazardous materials released into the atmosphere for various source geometries, terrain characteristics, and meteorological conditions. A study was designed to demonstrate the capabilities of a new airborne lidar sensor for mapping tracer gas distributions as a means of obtaining necessary model development and validation data. In addition, the tracer technique may provide a method to evaluate readily downwind concentrations of toxic and hazardous materials following an accidental release.
