Abstract

The Gaussian beam coupling of the master oscillator to large lasers like the Omega fusion laser system is of eminent importance for proper laser performance. In the past, this coupling was done without adequate attention given to beam quality. More recently, we redesigned the front end keeping in mind image relaying throughout the laser system as well as propagation of collimated beams in all amplifier sections. This idea was implemented starting right from the flat output mirror of the oscillator where the original plane phase front is established as a result of the stable oscillator configuration using a spherical mirror and a plane output coupler. To optimize the coupling to the laser system a variable magnification (zoom) spatial filter is employed before Injection into the main laser system. This optical system provides flexibility in maximizing beam fill factor without compromising beam uniformity due to diffraction effects.
