Abstract

Saturation of a resonance transition of an atomic constituent by a laser pulse has been shown1-3 to represent an extremely effective method of creating a plasma along the path of the laser pulse. This new form of laser ionization has found application in a variety of areas ranging from basic autoionization studies1 to plasma formation for high-power ion diodes used for inertial fusion.4
