Abstract
There are four major questions to be resolved in laser angioplasty. (1) What is the optimal laser wavelength for vascular recanalization? (2) What is the best design of fiber-optic waveguide delivery systems and catheters? (3) What is the optima) system for monitoring the effect of the laser energy? (4) What is the effect, immediate and long term, of laser ablation on vascular tissue? Recent developments in laser source technology, fiber optics, understanding the laser-tissue interaction, and catheter design suggest answers to these questions.
