Laser relevant spectroscopic properties of Ti3+-doped sapphire and YAG

Abstract

The development on Ti3+-doped sapphire1–4 as a tunable solid-state laser encouraged us5 to investigate the physics of Ti3+ in different materials. Starting with Ti3+-doped sapphire we used temperature-dependent measurement techniques as fluorescence, absorption, lifetime (from 4 to 650 K), and cw laser experiments to develop a fundamental model for the Ti3 +-3d1 electron system. We improved this model on Ti3+-doped YAG where the different site symmetry results in a different behavior of the Ti3+ ion.
