Abstract
Lanthanide aluminates of general formula LnMgAl11O19 have been known for some years. Starting from the PbFe12O19 or 6Fe2O3 PbO structure, and attempting to substitute Fe2O3 by Al2O3 and likewise PbO by ½ Ln2O3, it has been found necessary to stabilize the magnetopiumbite structure through some substitution of Al3+ by M2+, such as Mg. The new material of formula LnMgAl11O19 keeps the magnetopiumbite structure down to room temperature. Optical properties obtained by these substitutions open various interesting fields of application.
