High-power Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm using intracavity type II KTP

Abstract

We have developed a technique that takes advantage of the high-power density available within a cw Nd:YAG laser cavity and the large effective nonlinear coefficients of potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) in the type II phase-matching condition to generate efficiently both cw and Q-switched polarized TEM00 green outputs at 532 nm. Since the birefringence of the KTP crystal, when used in type II SHG, arbitrarily depolarizes the fundamental 1064-nm radiation, an unacceptable polarization loss results when such a crystal is inserted into a linearly polarized TEM00 cavity. For this reason, previous reports of type II SHG utilizing KTP have described either extracavity operation1 or intracavity operation in an unpolarized multimode Nd:YAG system2 where the polarization mixing in the thermally birefringent laser rod minimizes the effect of the KTP birefringence.
