Abstract

An image-rejection mixer (IRM) for coherent heterodyne lightwave systems was proposed1 and has now been demonstrated. This mixer makes it possible to detect a desired signal at frequency fLO ± fIF while rejecting interference from any signal at the image frequency fLO ∓ fIF. Distinguishing between these two signals, which would otherwise interfere at fIF in a conventional mixer, is especially useful in optical network applications based on wavelength-division multiplexing in which the carrier spacing is on the order of fIF.
