Abstract

Rapid progress in diode laser technology has revived research efforts in laser diode-pumped solid-state lasers. Solid-state lasers have improved spatial and spectral mode properties compared with direct diode laser radiation. In addition, their long upper-state lifetime allows for the possibility of Q-switching or mode locking. The solid-state medium also provides a means for amplification of the laser output. As recent experiments with Nd:YAG1 and NdrYLF2 have shown, diode laser pumping provides a stable efficient pump mechanism, pumping only in the absorption bands and only in the mode volume for end-pumped devices.
