Single-transverse-mode pulses from a TEA CO2 laser using negative branch unstable resonators

Abstract

The modal properties of negative branch unstable resonators with a coupling aperture at the confocal point are investigated, theoretically and experimentally. Such resonators are made of two concave mirrors with radii of curvature R1 and R2 (we assume R1 < R2); the mirrors are separated by a length L = (R1 + R2)/2. The mirrors are assumed of infinite extension; the presence of a coupling aperture at the confocal point limits the beam size.
