Abstract

The rare-gas halide trimers, and in particular Kr2F and Xe2CI, have received a considerable amount of attention recently. In the past year, three separate laboratories have reported measurement of the Kr2F(42Γ) absorption cross section at 248 nm,1–3 while one of the groups has measured the cross section from 248 to 570 nm using a dye-laser system.1 A real-time absorption measurement has also recently been made using an optical multichannel spectrometric system that provided a complete spectral view of the 42Γ 92Γ absorption band4 as well as other previously unseen features. However, little attention has been given to determining the product state of the absorption process. It has been assumed that the absorption band terminates at a bound upper level (92Γ).
