Abstract

Single-mode silica laser fibers doped with rare earths have been studied for their use in optical communication systems.1,2 Silica glass, however, may not be suitable as a laser host glass because of its low-stimulated-emission cross section and low limit of dopant level. Therefore, a long fiber of more than a few meters is needed to absorb the pump energy, achieving a high gain.
