Reliability of DFB ridge waveguide lasers emitting at 1.55 μm in normal and overstress conditions

Abstract

A reliable and efficient single-frequency source is required for 1.55-μm high-bit-rate-submerged and land-based communication links. To maximize both the interrepeater spacing and bandwidth of optical transmission systems using dispersive silica fibers, it is essential that the laser source emits at 1.55 μm at a single frequency only. Furthermore, for errorfree operation it must never hop between modes or fluctuate between separate frequencies. All these requirements are met by a semiconductor laser with distributed feedback (DFB) built into its structure in the form of a grating.
