Abstract

The success of the chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) has led to renewed interest in the possibility of using an electric discharge to generate singlet oxygen O2(1Δ) for pumping iodine. This presents advantages when compared to the chlorine-hydrogen peroxide reaction used in COIL. Experimental and theoretical investigations of discharges in oxygen or oxygen-containing mixtures have been carried out with this goal in mind.1–4
