Problems of x-ray laser amplification

Abstract

The extremely short lifetime of energy levels in the x-ray range (10−11-10−15 s) not only makes the population inversion difficult but also causes the normal traveling-wave amplification to be ineffective. To resolve the latter problem, a proposal involving synchronous pumping for x-ray laser traveling-wave amplification is proposed.
