Abstract

We discuss experiments on the generation of the second harmonic for picosecond neodymium laser radiation in silica optical fibers which had previously been exposed to and prepared by the same laser radiation.1 The following mechanism is suggested.2 The input radiation E0 exp(−0t) produces a weak signal of the second harmonic E2exp(2iω0t)~βE02exp(2iω0t), where β is a small nonlinearity factor due to higher multipoles. Let us assume that the medium possesses single-photon absorption of the field E2 and two-photon absorption of the field E0.
