Abstract
Optically pumped NH3 lasers operating at 12 μm have demonstrated high efficiencies in both cw and pulsed operation. These lasers operate on transitions between the ground state and the v2 = 1 level in NH3. Recently, two-step optical pumping has been used to obtain lasing between the v2 = 2 level and the v2 = 1 level of NH3. Line tunable operation was demonstrated In the 16-21-μm region with pulsed lasers,1 but initial attempts to obtain cw operation were unsuccessful.2
